MTC Week 6 ( Last MTC Email!!!!!!!!!!!)

Kumusta Pamilya!!
Time has flown! I can't believe I only have a couple more days here. It is kind of freaking me out. But I am super excited to go! I have absolutely loved the MTC and each week got better and better. We have had such amazing speakers and even better teachers! I am so blessed and so lucky.
So as you know this week was the new mission presidents seminar and the broadcast was on Sunday. Relief society was great also, Sister Hafen and Sister Gass played their violins and they sounded amazing!! After we came out of relief society in the morning, we were walking back to our class, and in front of our building were 3 cars parked on the sidewalk with security guards standing by them. I knew instantly they were the first presidency's cars!!! We tried to stalk them through the windows in the buildings, but the security people asked us to go back to class. Well as it turns out, our class has a PERFECT view of the cars so we totally saw President Monson getting into his car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was trying so hard to get a picture, but my camera just decided it didn't want to work -_- but we totally saw him and some of the other members of the quorum of the twelve. It was the coolest thing!  We also saw Eyring on Monday or Tuesday getting into his car, so I have a lovely blurry picture of him as well.
The beginning of this week was really cool. Sister Wilkes got to sing in a special choir this week and so they sang the opening song in every meeting for the new presidents this week, so she pretty much saw the whole quorum of the 12 as well as the whole 1st presidency. I am pretty jealous, but I know she had a great experience with it.

At the broadcast, we were sitting 7 rows back and I am the 4th seat in on the soprano side (the side not right next to the elders). It was SO cool to watch the all the members come in and I love the dramatic reverence that comes when they walk in and everyone stands up. It is my favorite part.

On Monday we watched  the broadcast again to see if we  could see our selves.  About eighteen minutes in to the broadcast you can see Sister Willkes (she's in a green shirt), me in Yellow, Sis. smart in dark blue, and Sis. Streble in white. So look for us!!

Tuesday night we had the greatest devotional EVER! It was Janice Kapp Perry !!!!! Her husband spoke first about his mission in France and how it was really hard and that it is important to listen to the spirit when we teach because it will always guide us. Then Sis. Perry spoke. She talked about how she got started writing songs and such. She pretty much wrote all my favorite songs in the Children's song book and we were able to sing All of them like; Child's Prayer, Families can be Together Forever, I love to See the Temple, I'm Trying to be Like Jesus, Etc. It was SO good!!
Then she told the story of how she met her husband. She said they were in the same music class in college getting ready to take a midterm, so she was practicing and she said he slid his chair over close to her and said "Those lips look like they could be doing something better than playing clarinet..."!!!!!!! Ha everyone went nuts! Then to top it, he gets up out of his chair, walks over to her and plants a great big kiss on her!!!! Ha everyone was going crazy!!!! He even got a standing ovation (mostly from the Elders of course) ha but it was so good!! The best part is, he is like 78. It was great! After that she sang a song she wrote for a family and all of her kids and grand kids had parts in it. And for her husbands part, he just says "I love you" or something and after his part he gave her ANOTHER great big kiss. I loved it!

For the end of her talk, she had the Sister's sing her version of "As Sister's in Zion".  I guess she came to the MTC a few months ago and was very impressed by all the new Sisters, so she wrote a beautiful new version of the song and called it "The Sister's of Zion". I have all the lyrics to it, so if I have time to send it to you I will. But anyway, The Elder's sang Helaman's army.(it's the efy melody). My favorite line that the sisters and elders sang is "We are NOW the Lord's missionaries". It gives me the chills. I just love it. It was really cool though when the Elder's part came because they all stood up at the same time. And I wasn't paying attention to well, so I don't know how they all knew to stand up, but it was probably the coolest thing I've ever seen and the spirit just hit so strong. It was beautiful, and I couldn't think of a better last Tuesday Devotional. It was too perfect!

So that was the excitement at the beginning of the week. We had class just like normal  everyday. Wednesday at gym time, we went outside and played Frisbee and stuff. It was fun.  I did 2 back handsprings. IT FELT SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!!  Elder Kunz in our district and I also have handstand contests. Its really fun (but don't tell anyone cause I don't think we're supposed to do stuff like that....haha oops).

We had our last lesson with our "investigator" Nico, and we committed him to baptism!! I memorized the commitment in Tagalog. He said yes! It was SO cool!! Tagalog is coming so much better now. We also taught another lesson to our other teacher last night, and we were able to pretty much do all of it in Tagalog with only a few English words here and there. And we were able to help him with some of his concerns. It was really neat to be able to understand what he was saying and be able to remember scriptures that applied to his needs.

On Thursday we had TRC and we got to skype with people! We thought we would be skyping real Filipinos...but I am pretty sure they were all just RM's. But the lessons went pretty well. Yesterday we had our "In Field Training", but we pretty much just sat there from 8-5:30, with meal breaks, and learned about what it's like in the field. It was good, but super long.

We started packing on Thursday, and it is totally stressing me out. I'm sure it'll be fine, but I have sent some things home and I think I am just going to leave my lotion, shampoo, conditioner, and giant thing of hand sanitizer here so that I don't go over on my luggage weight. It seriously feels so weird to be leaving. I think I'm ready but at the same time I am nervous because I have no idea what to expect. I bought a calling card today, so be near the house phone on Monday and I will be able to call you guys from the air port!! We have to be ready to go by 6:30, but again, our flight won't leave till 11:30, so we'll have plenty of time to call our families.

I love you guys SO much and I really appreciate all of the letters and packages you've sent me. I am so blessed and I am just so glad I have so much support from you guys. I hope Abby had a good birthday and congrats to dad on the new calling!!! I am so lucky to have you all in my life and for your great examples. Sometimes it hits me really hard and at weird times that I am actually a missionary, and will be in the Philippines in like 3 days. I can't wait for all my new adventures! Mahal Kita!!!!

Love,
Sister Mecham
Everyone huddled by the window to see the Prophet!

Not very happy to see Sister Harris leave for Moscow:(
Sister Streble likes to sing to her camera....ha! she is hilarious!
Sister Streble and Sister Smart love to serenade us with Cheetah Girls songs as well as "Sisters" from White Christmas. We all sing that song at least once a day and none of us really know the words..

MTC Week 5

Kumusta Pamilya!

Guess who has travel plans.....THIS SISTER!!!!!!!!!!! I seriously can't believe that I leave in a week and 2 1/2 days! Ahhh!! So we will leave July 1st around noon from Salt Lake, fly to Portland Oregon and have a 4 hour layover there, then off to TOKYO then after a super long flight (I think like 14 hours or something, yipee...), we will get to Manila, and then I assume we will take a bus or something to San Pablo. Craziness. Just pure craziness. I am SO excited though!!!! We will be split up from our district :( but Sister Wilkes and I and Sister Smart will all go with a group of other San Pablo missionaries, and then we meet back up with anther district in Tokyo. So at least we won't have to be alone.

So besides getting our legit flight plans, this week has been phenomenal. I absolutely love the MTC! Last Saturday night, we had TRC where you go and talk to a volunteer in Tagalog about things like prayer and church and the scriptures. Our first TRC was a couple weeks ago and it was terrible. The people could not understand us at all and it was just super awkward. After class, our teacher asked what was wrong and we both just started bawling cause we were really frustrated. So last week, we took a lot more time to prepare so that we wouldn't have that experience again. Our first volunteer we talked to also served with Carlos Morgan, so that was a good ice breaker, and then  as we were talking to him and just getting to know him, he just stopped and told us that our Tagalog is really good. He said that he volunteers every week and he hasn't ever had any one as good as us. We were both in SHOCK!! It was such a confidence booster and the rest of the lesson went really well. And even our second lesson went well too.

The volunteers evaluate the companionship and write things we could improve on and the first guy said that we were a great companionship and worked really well together. It was so cool!! I still am not sure if he says that to everyone or if he really means it, but either way I'll take it :) Then that night we kinda just pigged out on all of our sweets with our roommates as kind of one last hoorah with them before they left.

On Sunday we had Stephen B. Allen again, and this time he gave the talk he had prepared a couple weeks ago when he was prompted to talk about other things. But I loved his talk this week because he showed us a bunch of commercials the church has put out over the years that he helped produce and such. It was really fun to watch all of them and then he related them to missionary work.

Tuesday night, we made the trek over to the Marriot center again for that devotional. It seriously will never get old seeing the thousands of missionaries all walking over there. It is so cool. And that night we sang in the choir again, but I don't think we were on the TV. Boo. Ha! but it was still a really good devotional. Robert C. Gay of the 70 spoke and talked about how missionary work is a revelatory work and we HAVE  to listen to the spirit when we teach and make sure we invite everyone, even the leaders we will be working with to come to Christ. He was a mission pres. in Ghana and said when Elder Holland came one time he asked the missionaries what power they had. After everyone shared what they thought, he told them "You have the power to astonish the world" because our real companion is the Savior and we are empowered by God. It was so cool. I absolutely love the speakers we get to hear from at the MTC and it really is so good to get a good pep talk each week about our work.

Monday we had to say goodbye to our adorable roomies. I miss them so much, but we got their email addresses and everything so we are patiently waiting to hear from them. They were the greatest!!

Wednesday was fantastic. We finally got to be Host's to the new missionaries!!!!! The first Sister I helped came early because she flew in from Washington, so I just helped her carry her luggage to her room and then helped her get her books and showed her to her class room. After that I went back to the curb where I was supposed to stand to help host more people, but as I was walking up, I saw Sister (Meghan) Derrick getting out of the car and I was able to Host her! It was so fun! So I did the same thing and just helped her to her room and get books and go to her class. It was really fun to be able to host a familiar face.

After we finished hosting, we had class again, and Sister Wilkes and I taught a really great lesson to our investigator "Nico". It is so amazing to see how fast I am picking up the language. I definitely don't know everything he said to us, but I was able to understand most of it and testify to him as well as answer some of his questions. It really was amazing. After class, our teacher Bro. Pearce, who is "Nico" ,  said that each of our lessons tonight were really good and he could feel the spirit very strongly in both of them.

That night when we were back in our dorm, we were sitting down to do a devotional with our new roommates, because we almost always did a devotional with our old roomies, and Sis. Harris pokes her head in the door and says, you are never going to believe who is here, then Sister (Abbey) Hafen comes in!!!! I totally freaked out and screamed and hugged her and we jumped around and screamed some more. I was SO happy to see her!!!!! I seriously couldn't stop smiling. It was so fantastic! I was so happy to see her. I seriously feel like the luckiest person ever! I have Sister Harris AND Sister Hafen on the same floor as me. It is just too perfect. Sis. Hafen is also in my branch so we have the exact same schedule so I get to see her a lot :) I am so happy about that. It will definitely be nice to have her there when Sister Harris leaves on Monday to Russia. I am going to miss her SO MUCH!!!!!!! (Also Sister Harris says Hi !

Also they are setting up for the Mission Presidents this weekend so they have been cleaning up the MTC and painting, so the campus looks great! We walked past a room a couple days ago and there were tons of gorgeous flower arrangements in there. It was awesome. It made me really excited for Sunday! Be looking for me in the choir. I am going to be wearing my yellow shirt from the missionary mall and my hair
will be half up so you can see my name badge. And I will be standing by Sister Harris and Sister Wilkes.
Well I think that's all. I love this church I love that I'm a missionary, and I can't wait to go to the Philippines!!!

Mahal Kita!!!

Love,
Sister Mecham

This is Sister Amende and Sister Ormond. They are both from New Zealand. Amende was the cutest little thing and had a super strong accent, so it was so nice to just listen to them talk because they had the greatest accents and were all so genuine. It was great. Ormond helped me the first nigh I was here and just gave me a pep talk that it would all be alright. It was so nice of her. These two were both just so kind and so loving.
These are all the Roomies!!!!!! I love them so much!!!
Last night with our roomies!!!

Sis. Wilkes and I FINALLY got Philippines shirts!!!!!!!! Woot woot

This is Sister Gleave. She was in my english class at Dixie!
The morning they left :( They were the best!!!

Ran into Elder Sant on our way to choir practice.

SISTER HAFEN!!!!!! Seriously I could not stop smiling!!!****
This picture is my favorite. I am so lucky and so blessed. These two are such blessings and HUGE reminders from the Lord that he really wants me here. I love them both so much:)
Sis. Wilkes and I with Sister Kaufusi and Sister Krix. Kaufusi is from New Zealand and apparently at night when she would go to the bathroom and come back in, I would be sitting up in my bed starring at her and totally creep her out. But I don't remember doing that...haha oh well. And Krix is from Sydney Australia and may or may not be one of my absolute favorite people in the world. She is hilarious. She said one time after gym while she was just laying on her bed, "If i did a situp, my stomach would explode and a hamburger would pop out covered in chocolate and Doughnuts". haahaha seriously she was the greatest and she would make me laugh all the time. I definitely miss her.

MTC Week 4

Kumusta!!!
I am officially half way done with the MTC!!! Ah it is crazy, but feels pretty good. I am finally getting in the routine of things and my body is more used to the lack of sleep. This week has been pretty good and I am totally getting better at Tagalog. During one of the lessons we taught this week, we were trying to help our investigator feel the spirit, but he said he still hadn't, but we just continued on with our lesson on repentance and at the end I bore my testimony about it and I totally started to cry, I felt the spirit so strongly and I was able to remember a lot of Tagalog and tell him what I knew about repentance and then as we were leaving he said that he felt the spirit! It was so cool. And definitely my favorite lesson so far.
So some things I have forgotten mention is that a couple Saturday's ago, while sister Harris and I were getting ready for bed, I got a really bad bloody nose and it pretty much just gushed blood for like 20 minutes. It was nasty. But Sister Harris took good care of me ;). I think I got it because I was really stressed that  week and hadn't been drinking a lot of water....oops. Also at the beginning of this week I was sick with like a sore throat and runny nose and I just felt super weak. It was not fun, but I got over it pretty quickly, I think I have just stressed my body out a little bit, but I am feel much better now.
Anyway. On Sunday we had choir practice and like over 1,000 missionaries showed up because they knew that we will be singing in a couple weeks, so there were hoards of people there. Ha it was probably half the MTC. Towards the end of our practice, the choir director asked how many of us had had dinner and maybe 300 people raised their hands. So the cafeteria was a mad house after choir...even worse than fast Sunday. It was crazy.
Tuesday night was SO cool because we got to go over to the Marriot Center for the devotional. There were TONS of missionaries and it was so cool to be apart of that. We sang again in that devotional and were totally on the screen again and our speaker was amazing!!!!! It was Sister and (Elder?) Arnold of the 70. When he started his talk, he talked about a few weeks ago or something when they all met with the 1st presidency in the temple and he was asked to pray to open the meeting. He told us that he prayed sincerely for all the missionaries and then told us about President Monson.
He said that Pres. Monson is also very concerned and thoughtful of the missionaries. He testified to us that President Monson loves us so much and I got chills all over my body. I really could feel the love he had for us and it was so cool. The rest of his talk was also amazing and was a really good pep talk. He said that we have a huge responsibility, but if we remember who we are, remember our purpose, understand our callings, and be obedient, we will be great missionaries. He also shared the scripture Jacob 1:9 about how important it is to really be a good missionary and work hard so that you don't have any regrets on your mission. It was so good.
So this week, one of our teachers, Bro. Nicholes, went to China, so we got 2 more teachers that alternate days. One of the new teachers, Brother Calder, said he went on his mission to Quezon City, and so I asked if he knew Carlos (Morgan) and he said Carlos was his district leader!! So be sure to tell Carlos for me. But anyways, I really like that we've been able to have so many teachers because they all have different takes and different advice to give us.
Well I love you guys and I hope dad has a good father's day and a good last day being bishop! I love him so much and I am so glad he was able to still be the bishop when I left :)

MTC Week 3

Kumusta!!!
Time is the most bizarre thing here. The days are SUPER long, but the weeks go by really fast. It's strange. But I still really like it. The schedule is super busy. We literally are going from 6:30 to 10:30 and I think I may be developing a few cavities from all the candy I have to eat to stay awake during the day. Ha but on the plus side, I am totally learning!!! I am getting super good at praying and we are learning a lot more vocab and conjugations, so I can kinda pretend to make sentences. Our teachers, Bro. Pearce and Bro. Nicholes want us to SYL (speak your language) as much as possible, and it has been super hard because I really don't know that many words...ha but it is still fun to try. I pretty much have a Spanish/English/Tagalog vocab (spangolish). If I don't know the word in Tagalog I throw out a Spanish word so at least it's not English...ha but I'm not really sure if that counts...
Fast Sundays here are madness. I have never been so hungry, and I am pretty sure every other missionary felt the same. The cafeteria was so chaotic and there were just lines of people everywhere. I am so glad I only have to live through one more of those. It was crazy.
Also you would all be shocked to know that I totally have woken up on time everyday. And today we got up at 5:30 and started our laundry then went to an exercise class, went back and finished laundry by 7 then ate and showered and had our personal study till about 9:30 and are now doing emails. I feel super productive. And last week we did the same thing and it felt so good to get everything done early so we just had time to focus on the temple in the afternoon.
Anyways. Dad asked me who some of our devotional speakers have been and we have had some really good ones. The first Sunday here we were supposed to have the 1st counselor of the General Relief society come and speak, but she never showed up, so the MTC Presidents wives all gave talks about Joseph Smith. Those ladies are so great and super classy and have really great testimonies, but one of them looks like Gammi Num-Num from Master of Disguise so it is kinda hard for me to focus on what she's saying when she talks cause I keep picturing that part of the movie... But then that night we had one of the managing directors from the MTC talk and it was AMAZING!!! He had prepared a talk but when he stood up he said that he wasn't going to use it and just went off what he was prompted to say. Holy cow. The spirit was so strong. In the middle of His talk, he had the tech people find the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sing "Come, Come, Ye Saints" and then after we watched it one time, he had everyone sing it with them. It was the coolest thing ever. He called that song the "Missionary Anthem". It was so cool.
We also had Craig Zwick of the 70 speak to us last Tuesday with his wife. A few months ago he came to St. George, but it took a while for me to recognize him. He talked about the MTC and called it "The University of God's Kingdom" and talked about how we should become better disciples of Christ.
This Sunday we had Joseph Jenkins, the district president speak. He was like a main engineer for the Portland Temple and used the steps it took to build that temple and applied it to us and how to be better missionaries. Then on Tuesday night a guy came and kinda did a monologue sort of thing from the perspective of Willard Richards and told the story of Joseph Smith. It was really good.
I love being here and the devotionals really are so good! On June 23 we are singing in the choir for the new Mission presidents at the Marriott Center and it is going to be broad casted so be sure to watch it!!! Also, Sister Harris, Sister Wilkes and I were all on "TV" again for the choir on Tuesday. Ha we are getting pretty famous here ;)
Every day there is always something someone says or something I read that reminds me I am supposed to be here. It is so cool. The work is definitely hard and I am completely exhausted at the end of the day, but I love that I am here and surrounded by such good people. My Kasama, Sister (Kennedy) Wilkes and I have gotten really close and have lots of fun. Our district is also definitely opening up a lot more and getting to know each other better. One of the districts left for the Philippines this week, so it was sad saying goodbye to them, but it makes me excited that that will be me in just a few more weeks! It's crazy.
We have taught like 4 lessons to 2 investigators this week (who are just our teachers) and I feel pretty good about them. We were able to memorize some of our sentences and even could answer some of the questions they asked us. It was pretty cool. Tonight we have TRC that is where you have to teach just some volunteers who are just being themselves and practice what we know. I am a little bit nervous, but I'm sure it'll be fine.
One of the sisters in our district let me read this really great talk her mom sent her. It is by Sheri Dew called, " You were born to lead, you were born for glory." It is such a good talk, so I definitely encourage you all to read it, and It would be super great if you could send me my own copy. It pretty much is just a really good pep talk and she even mentions the Philippines in it!
I just really love you guys so much and again I love love love love love your DearElders! It is so fun to hear what you guys are up to and getting mail is just fun. Also thank you for sending me everything I ask for and for cleaning my room for me. You guys really are the best and I can feel your love and your prayers everyday. I am so grateful for everything you do and I am just SO happy. I am super stressed sometimes, but I just have to remind myself I have a lot to learn and I will be fluent eventually. I love being a missionary and I love that I am apart of something so amazing.
Mahal Kita!!!!!
Love,

MTC Week 2

Pamilya,
Can you believe I've already been gone two weeks?!?!? Craziness. There is SO much I have to tell you and I would really like to send some pictures too. The link to the blog won't work, but I'm sure it looks great.
So last week we were able to go the temple and it was great! It was kind of weird seeing so many young workers there along with all young people in the session. But it felt so good to be there again. Last week I forgot to tell you that I am senior companion for the first three weeks we are here then it will switch to Sis. Wilkes. It has been kind of hard being the one to take charge of lessons and such because there is SO much I want to say in our lessons, but I can say maybe 2 words of it in Tagalog, so we've had to work on that, and I really feel like our companionship is getting much stronger. I have a great companion!!
On Sunday, Sis. Harris and I had to say goodbye again to Elder Neely because he got moved to the other MTC. It was really depressing and not very fun, but we were able to meet up after the devotional and Sister Monson's funeral. (Which was SO powerful. Not to mention the totally amazing speaker we had before). So my Sunday was all really good minus the fact that we probably won't get to see Elder Neely till he gets home:/
But also on that Sunday Sis. Wilkes and I went to choir and I sat by Sis. Harris and then on Tuesday we had another practice and sang in the devotional. But during the devotional they film all of it and have like the fancy camera shots like at conference. So of course near the end of the song they totally zoom in on Sis. Harris and I and I like looked up and saw myself then looked back at the music and I could just feel my face get super red. It was super embarrassing, but after our zone was like WE SAW YOU!!! Haha it was great. So we are pretty much famous now ;)
On Monday night after our class got over and we did our planning, our zone went out in the hall and sang "Called to Serve" in Tagalog and it was SO awesome!! I loved it. We have a really loud zone because we have a bunch of black Polynesian Elders in our zone, so after we sang, we went outside and had like this team huddle sort of thing and did this cheer and everyone was pretty much starring at us, but it was way fun.
I love our branch president so much (pres. Smith). He said that the Philippines is the 2nd fastest growing number of members right now, while Tonga is the first! How cool is that?! I am so excited to be going there and be able to help so many people who are ready to hear the gospel is going to be so amazing!!
On Thursday, one of our sisters had to go home. Her mom died like a week before she came here, but she still felt like she should come. But this week she decided she needed to be with her family. She is from Samoa, so she will be home for 6 months then come back out. She is going to the San Pablo mission, so our branch pres. said that there is a very good possibility that one of us going to San Pablo could be her trainer, and it made me feel more at ease with the situation because she is such a nice girl and such a hard worker. Our district definitely misses her.
Also my zone loved the cookies and pretty much everyone was able to share them with the rest of our district cause they were so big. Also I love the package you sent me and I seriously love the bag that was in there! You guys are so great and I love all the DearElder's you all send me. Everyone in our district is super jealous of how many I get. Sis. Wilkes told her family as a joke last week that our district was having a completion to see who could get the most letters, so I got a really nice letter from her dad to "help" with my letter count. It was very nice of him.
I love you guys so much and I love that I am learning so much. I can pretty much say a prayer now and bear my testimony. I am also learning a lot of vocab on a program called TALL (i forgot what it stands for) but its pretty much just like doing flashcards and stuff. But you can listen to some one say it as much as you want and you can even record yourself saying it too, so that has helped me a TON. The other day I tried to teach my self "head, shoulder's, Knees, and toes, but the word for toe itself is daliri ng paa.... ha so I am going to have to learn a different song.
Please keep the letters coming and Pictures!!! I loved that one of Hayden :)
Mahal Kita!
Love,
Sister Mecham
